Guidelines for Debate


The Debate is a unique competition in which the best minds from all over the country come down to IILM GSM Greater Noida to debate on pressing social, political and economic matters and the viewers decide who is victorious. In this thrilling energy filled affair, only those with exceptional logic, analytical thinking and mind boggling persuasion skills will prevail.
Rules :
1.      This is a team event. Each team will have 2 members.
2.      The event will be conducted in 3 rounds, prelims, semi-finals and finals.
3.      Each speaker will be given 4+1 minutes to deliver his/her speech in the order 1st Proposition, 1st Opposition, 2nd Proposition, 2nd Opposition and so on.
4.      After all the speakers have spoken, the debate will be open to the floor where the audience or the judges may put questions to any of the speakers.
5.      Finally there will be a summary speeches of 2 minutes each delivered by any one member of the team. He will have to touch upon both the opposition and proposition, in that order.
6.      The teams will be given one hour to prepare for the debate.
7.      Internet access will be available using the team’s own network enabled devices.
8.      The use of written or printed materials during the event is allowed.
9.      After the 1st minute of each speech, members from the opposing team may request a point of information. Points of information will not be permitted in the 5th minute of a speech.
10.  Cross questioning is not allowed.
11.  In the prelims, the winners will be decided by the judge based on the following criteria:
Content (50%), Questions posed and answered (30%), Structure (20%).
12.  4 teams from the prelims will be selected for the semi-finals. Here the participants will not only have to speak for 4+1 minutes each, but also have to do so by trying to imitate the voice of a youth icon or any leading Indian.
13.  Marks division: Content (50%), Voice (20%), Questions tackled (10%), Structure (20%).
14.  2 teams out of the 4 semi-finalist teams qualify for the finals.
15.  The finals and semi-finals will be Oxford Union style debates where winners will be decided by a combination of judges’ marks and audience’s opinion based on a poll of how many people in the audience are ‘for’ and how many are ‘against’ the motion after the debate.
16.  The decision of the judges is final and binding.
17.  Any correspondence with the judge should be through the organizing team member.
18.  Any form of misdemeanour or abusive language will lead to disqualification of the team.
19.  The organizing team reserves the right to change or modify any of the rules.
